What Is a T-Nut?

T-nuts are a type of fastener featuring a threaded barrel and a T-shaped flange. Also used to join wood, these fastening elements are ideal for establishing strong and precise connections between aluminium components and are often used for beds and both office and domestic furniture.

There are several common types of T-nut, including:

• Pronged: Offering a simple yet reliable connection, pronged T-nuts are designed to be simply tapped into a pre-drilled hole and stay firmly in place thanks to their self-locking design.
• Rivet: With a heavy flange and large barrel, rivet T-nuts are extra strong. Once machine-inserted, they provide easy screw or bolt access and ensure easy assembly.
• Drop-in: Simply slotted into place and rotated, these T-nuts are perfect for adding to existing frameworks.
• Weld: Designed to be welded onto metal surfaces, these T-nuts don’t rely on prongs, providing a smoother, cleaner finish.

How To Use a T-Nut

The best approach for using T-nuts will vary slightly depending on the aluminium profile and nut being used, but the installation process for standard T-nuts is as follows.

Begin by sliding your T-nut into the open end of your aluminium profile, ensuring that the pilot projection is facing the centre of your profile. Position your component against the profile and attach your bolt by inserting it through the bracket and into the T-nut. Finally, simply tighten the bolt until the connection is secured. For drop-in T-nuts, simply lower them into place and tighten to secure.
